Company History

Cheam Motors is amongst the oldest trading names in Surrey, having been established in the picturesque village of Cheam near Sutton in Surrey in 1926. The company quickly established itself as a supplier of quality motor cars, a tradition it still upholds and fiercely prides itself on to this day.

In the post war years a variety of fine British marques were represented from the large showrooms in Ewell Road, including Riley, Wolseley, MG, Standard-Triumph and Morris. In the late 1960’s with the formation of British Leyland Austin and Rover were added, along with a selection of brands from Rootes (laterly Chrysler). The company continued to represent British Leyland from the same location until 1980, when the company’s owners decided to wind the business up and sell the showrooms, along with their landmark clock (a feature that remains to this day on the offices that were subsequently built in place of the garage).

Two senior members of the team at Cheam decided not to allow the Cheam Motors name to pass into history, and in 1981 Cheam Motors (Ewell) Limited opened for business, continuing to provide the same level of service and customer care to many of the regular customers that loyally followed the company to it’s new premises in Cheam Road, Ewell near Epsom, just a few miles down the road from the original premises. The company specialised in low mileage, quality used cars, but felt that there was an opportunity and facilities for a new car franchise.

After a period of successful negotiation Cheam Motors were proud to be awarded the franchise for the then little known Subaru product. Subaru, part of Fuji Heavy Industries, one of Japan’s largest industrial conglomerates, is the biggest producer of All-Wheel Drive (AWD) vehicles in the world, and today produces some of the most exhilarating and reliable vehicles available, including the sporty Impreza, practical Forester, the luxurious and spacious Legacy and Outback ranges which have now evolved into their fourth generation, the frugal new Justy and the B9 Tribeca, which is Subaru's first forray into the SUV market.

The end of 2004 and the early part of 2005 saw Cheam Motors undertake an extensive refurbishment of the Cheam Road premises, with all customer areas including the showroom, service reception, waiting area, parts department and exterior signage gaining a fresh modern new look to comply with the Subaru corporate image.

Today the ethos that has existed throughout the history of Cheam Motors is still the cornerstone of the company. Quality cars, honest and straight forward business dealings, and a level of customer service and care that is second to none.
